CHAPTER 14

“No way. Giving up on Kiera isn’t an option,” Hollister said through clenched teeth. His fists were curled into balls, and he was so angry he was practically vibrating.

“She’s not who she represented herself to be,” Sebastian shot back. “Putting the entire coven right in the middle of that minefield isn’t an option.”

“Sebastian,” Gigi said, placing a light hand on his arm. “Let’s take a breath and—”

Her significant other placed his hand over hers and then pulled her into him, tucking her under his arm. “It’s too dangerous, G. I know that when you learned she was a victim of domestic violence you had to do whatever you could to help. But now that we know she’s a former agent for the Paranormal Task Force and was indicted for manslaughter, it seems her story was completely fabricated. Butting in on this could land the entire coven into a legal nightmare, not to mention it’s dangerous as hell. Promise me you’ll stay far away from this.”

I stared at Sebastian and Gigi, my mouth hanging open as I tried to process what Sebastian had just said. Magical Task Force agent? Indicted for manslaughter?

“We can’t just write off Kiera,” Hollister insisted. “The woman I know isn’t a criminal. Or a murderer.”

“Murderer?” I finally got out as I perched on the edge of the couch. “Someone needs to tell me what’s going on, because I feel like I woke up to an alternate reality.”

Everyone turned my direction, obviously just noticing I was awake.

Gigi quickly hurried over and sat next to me. “Sebastian got the fingerprint results back from the dagger.”

“Okay,” I said, my gaze boring into Sebastian’s. “What did you find?”

Sebastian took a step away from Hollister and moved to sit on the coffee table in front of me. “The prints belong to Desiree Ciaràn Hopkins.”

I nodded.

“You knew her real name.” Hollister said. It was a statement, not a question. “I thought so.”

“I did. It’s one of the things she forbade me to talk about to anyone.” I stared past Hollister as I added, “For everyone else’s safety.”

“For her own is more like it,” Sebastian said, his tone ice-cold.

“Explain,” I demanded.

Sebastian ran a frustrated hand through his dark hair and started to pace the living room. “We actually got the results of the prints back yesterday.”

“And you didn’t call Marion?” Gigi asked, her expression pinched in concern.

“No.” He shook his head. “Because there was absolutely nothing on her. It was as if her entire history had been wiped from all of the assessable data bases.”

Sebastian was a high-powered lawyer and had access to searchable databases that weren’t available to the general public.

“At first I thought maybe she was part of a witness protection program,” Sebastian continued. “But when the private investigator did a deeper dive, he found evidence that she’d worked for the Magical Task Force. And as you may know, we have contacts there. That’s when we got confirmation that she was an agent and has been on the run since she was indicted for manslaughter.
